A little help with Splatt

How to get started, understand a balance and put things right.

Your first split

  1. Find your Splatt ID in Friends or Settings. Share it privately, or enter a friend's ID and send a request.
  2. Once the request is accepted, open Quick Split. Choose Manual to enter a total, or Scan receipt to share individual items. Choose who paid and who is sharing the cost.
  3. Check the shares before saving. Your balances update when the expense has been saved.

Use a Group for shared trips and occasions. Use Bills to manage a household's recurring costs and due dates.

Repayments do not move money

Splatt keeps a record of repayments. It does not transfer money or connect to your bank. Pay the other person using a method you have agreed separately.

After paying, record the repayment in Splatt. It stays awaiting confirmation until the recipient confirms they have received it. Recording it alone does not settle the balance.

You can record part of a balance. For example, a confirmed £30 repayment against £50 leaves £20 outstanding. Currencies are kept separate: a pound balance and a euro balance are never added together or converted.

A bill paid to a provider and a friend reimbursing that bill's payer are different events. Check your own outstanding share.

Split the items on a receipt

Quick Split starts with Scan receipt. Choose Take photo for a new receipt, or Choose existing photo for one you already have. Choose Manual at the top to enter a total instead. You can also enter receipt items manually.

Your browser controls the camera and photo picker, including on an iPhone Home Screen app. If Take photo does not offer the camera, use Choose existing photo. Reading happens on your device: the photo and raw recognised text are not uploaded or saved to your account.

The optional English-language reader downloads only when you choose to read a photo, so allow extra time and data. You can enter items manually without it. Use a JPEG, PNG or WebP photo up to 10 MB. If your phone provides a HEIC photo that will not open, export it as JPEG or use a clear JPEG/PNG screenshot.

Total verified means the recognised items and explicit adjustments add up exactly to the receipt total. It does not guarantee that OCR understood every item. If a receipt needs checking, compare the displayed difference and highlighted rows against the photo. A quantity, duplicate row or unclear price can need checking even when the difference is zero.

Splatt may recheck an uncertain scan once on your device before asking you to correct it. It never invents a missing item, discount or fee just to make the numbers match. Correct missing items, prices, quantities, discounts or charges instead; the total recalculates as you make changes.

Total, subtotal, payment, change and included VAT lines are not purchases. If an unclear scan finds the total but not the items, choose Split the total manually, check that amount and save a normal split. This does not claim that the receipt was itemised.

Check where each discount applies. A discount on one product reduces only that item and the people sharing it; a whole-receipt discount follows the basket. If the printed offer is unclear, choose its scope before saving. Use Check receipt to edit a verified scan, including adding an item discount.

  1. Choose who is sharing before reading or entering items. For existing items, tick each person’s assignments or choose Share all items. You can then untick the items they did not share.
  2. Check every item name and line total against the receipt. A line total is the full cost of that line, including any quantity.
  3. Tick everyone sharing each item. For your own sandwich, leave only You ticked. Unticking someone changes who shares the item; it never removes that item from the receipt total. Every item needs at least one person.
  4. Check who paid, the currency, date, final total, charges and discounts. Add tax, service or tip only if it is not already included. Items, charges and discount must add up exactly.
  5. Choose Confirm and save split once the items, prices and people are correct. This is the final save: your balances update only after saving succeeds.

You can go back or switch modes while keeping the split open. If reading or saving fails, your entries stay available to correct or retry. Discarding the split clears its unsaved receipt draft.

The reviewed item summary and assignments are saved with the shared expense, so its participants can understand their shares. Balances use the saved expense and exact shares, never the photo or raw recognised text.

Keep to 40 items and item names of up to 100 characters. The complete saved summary, assignments and your notes must fit within 4,000 characters. If it is too long, shorten the item names or notes, or use a normal exact split.

Every penny stays in the split

Splatt calculates money in integer minor units, such as pence. An equal £10 split between three people is £3.34, £3.33 and £3.33. When the payer shares the cost, they receive the first remainder penny; the remaining order is stable. Equal shares differ by at most one penny.

Receipt items keep their printed prices, quantities and any explicit product discount. The item's net price is shared only by its assigned people. Item assignments, discounts and charges must reconcile to the final expense, and everyone's shares must add up exactly to that amount. Repeated odd-penny items do not give the payer a new extra penny on every line. Currencies stay in separate ledgers.

Can’t find your verification or reset email?

Check Junk or Spam, and Outlook's Other folder. Look for a message from Splatt <noreply@splatt.online>. If you recognise the message you requested, mark it as not junk.

Open the newest link in the same browser you used to request it. Keep verification links, reset links and passwords private. Splatt support will never need them.

Check the address you entered before requesting another email. Delivery can take a few minutes; repeatedly requesting links can trigger a temporary sending limit. Existing accounts should log in or request a password reset rather than sign up again.

Inbox placement depends on your email provider. These steps can help, but cannot guarantee a message will avoid Junk.

Friends, statements and history

Removing a friend ends the direct connection. It does not erase expenses, confirmed repayments or balances, and it does not remove either person from shared groups.

A Connection Statement keeps the closing balance when the friendship ended. The current balance can change after a later repayment is confirmed. Previous connections remain available in Friends, and you can settle existing balances there.

Reconnect using the same Splatt ID before adding new direct expenses. Reconnecting does not duplicate old transactions.

Something looks wrong?

If a save fails, keep the split open, check your connection and retry. Do not assume a payment or expense was saved unless Splatt confirms it. If a balance looks wrong, review the expenses and confirmed repayments in that same currency and group.
